October 19:
This morning we drove through the Southland region to Te Anau.
Our first stop was at Slope Point, the southernmost point of South Island.
We then drove to the Waipapa Point Lighthouse. It was cold and extremely windy, so we skipped the planned Coastal Walk and just stayed at the lookout point.
We could see the lighthouse
At this point we decided to have an easy day of sightseeing and skip any planned hikes due to the cold and wind.
We stopped in Invercargill to see the Bill Richardson Transportation Museum. Once we got there, we decided we didn't feel like entering, but did see this fish mobile at the entrance.
We made a quick stop in Riverton to see the Whale Statue.
And then stopped at McCracken's Rest to see the famous sign post.
We then drove to Tuatapere to see the giant sausage statue.
Since it was in front of Tui Base Camp restaurant, we stopped for lunch. I had a chicken pie and Steve got a sausage and L&P.
We had a nice stop at the Clifden Suspension Bridge. Google maps told us to drive across it, despite it being closed to vehicles.
then climbed on more things (a zip line) in a park in Manapouri.
We drove around part of Lake Manapouri and saw where the boats leave if you take a Doubtful Sound cruise.
We then had a nice walk around the Punanga Manu o Te Anau bird sanctuary to see Takahe.
Later, we compared them to the Giant Takahe Statue in downtown Te Anau.
